A Letter to NRIs

Dealing with Indian property from overseas demands time and effort, and there will still be variables outside of your control. I learnt this the hard way in the early 2000s as my wife and I juggled young careers alongside even younger kids. I used to wonder if the extra effort it took to manage Indian real estate assets was worth it.

In 2013, my family and I moved back to India after fourteen years in America. I began to manage my assets with the standards I saw in America. The first lease deed I wrote in India, modeled after those I had signed in the States, was for myself. Then, a brother-in-law, still abroad, needed help. I was soon managing the properties of immediate family outside India. When distant relatives started reaching out, the need for a trusted yet professional local party to help people manage their Indian property became clear.

In 2016, I quit my job to build the team I once needed myself: Servefar (formerly Property Handling). Since then, we’ve seen that each property and its requirements are different, but each property owner’s requirements are roughly the same. We built team and processes to address these very requirements. It is absolutely worth the effort to manage your Indian assets, but not your effort.
